March 2025, Make your life count.

Yep. I said it. Make your life count. Because it does. This photo has a clear path to deep waters that go on forever and ever. Yet, at times in our lives, the pathway isn't always clear. And it's full of zigzags, loops, and disappointing starts. March is also celebrated as Women's History Month, a time recognizing a demographic that makes a difference regardless the special challenges thrown our way. And regardless of what intersection a woman belongs to.

So what does living a life that counts require? Intentionality.

We must wake up every day and choose to push ahead. No matter what's going on and how we feel. And no matter how hard it is.

Digging out of depression after I was attacked and after experiencing various life disappoints was tough. At times, there was no one to talk to, no safe person, especially outside of any therapist setting. Even on the days where it was sunny outside, it felt like I was walking thru quicksand during a hurricane. It was scary. At the same time, I looked normal on the outside.

We must be intentional to recognize when our mental health needs support and be willing to reach out for help. Establish relationships with people around us who are genuinely safe and want the best for us. It's important to be able to tell someone you really are not okay, instead of just winging it. Who's checking on you regularly? And who do you check on genuinely? Or is it that you are surrounded by people who only need things from you? If there is no safe person in your life, know the hotlines and/or local mental health and social service organizations to call for resources. Before you know it, you will be a shoulder for someone else. Yes. We are human and need one another.

We must be intentional to incorporate joy into our lives. Not just busyness! Joy doesn't depend on life being all rainbows and sunshine. It's one of the shortest words we still struggle to define at times. What gets your juices going? What fuels you? Are there causes near your heart that you can support with your time or talents? Those causes can often foster positive relationships, new directions, and breathe life into our tired souls. It brings about impact that goes beyond our lifetimes. Be still and know that you matter. Let's commit to leading lives full of meaning and purpose.

To make your life count, you must love yourself. Consider some of these songs for your playlist: Greatest Love of All, written by Linda Creed and covered by one of the greatest singers Whitney Houston, "It's My Life" by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Max Martin, "What a Wonderful World" covered by Louis Armstrong, "Live Your Life" by rapper T.I. featuring Rhianna, Eminem's "Lose Yourself". From Bizet's Carmen opera aria, Habanera, to country singer Lee Ann Womack's anthem "I Hope You Dance", music is full of songs that remind us to harness every moment. What's on your playlist?
